Kent’s 10 best bookshops to visit with the kids for World Book Day
Here’s how and where to support independent bookshops in Kent.
The anxiety-induced scrabbling for costumes for the kids to wear to school aside, World Book Day is a great idea. Catering for all ages, from toddler to teen, the campaign is designed to get little ones reading. Rather brilliantly, a number of books are made available for just a quid. So a trip to your local indie bookshop is just the ticket to celebrate.
The well-appointed Harbour Books in Whitstable will encourage the kids to browse. There’s also a good selection of games and stationery to be swapped for pocket money.
Down the road in Margate, don’t miss The Margate Bookshop. In Ramsgate, dedicated kids’ bookstore Tales on Moon Lane is the obvious go-to (with its cosy reading nook and toy train circling the ceiling). Don’t miss new kid on the block Book Bodega which has a good range of kiddie’s titles, also in Ramsgate, or Herne Bay’s The Little Green Bookshop.
Elsewhere, Sevenoaks Bookshop offers plenty of children’s’ options among its 11,000-strong titles. In Canterbury – which has a wealth of good second-hand bookshops – the stand out is The Chaucer Bookshop.
Tales on Market Street in Faversham also has a solid selection, as does Store 104 on Rochester High Street, and the Folkestone Bookshop.

True story: You can of course put your £1 token towards a full-price book instead.
Take your time: Browse, stay a while – and make sure you buy something to help support local indie bookshops.
